Standard LASIK
Under standard LASIK, after the creation of the corneal flap, your surgeon will use an advanced excimer laser to reshape the cornea by removing a pre-determined amount of corneal tissue. The amount of tissue to be removed is determined during the pre-operative assessment. These measurements are typically in agreement with the recent prescription for your glasses and/or contact lenses.
The flap is then replaced and within minutes, natural forces hold the flap down on the cornea. Within a few hours, the surface layer of the cornea (epithelium) begins to grow over the cut edge of the flap to seal it into position. Within days, collagen bonds form within the cornea around the edge of the flap, permanently sealing it.
This safe and painless procedure takes approximately ten minutes of operating room time, during which the laser is used for less than one minute on each eye.

Please note that Standard LASIK can also be performed using an IntraLase Femtosecond laser, instead of a precision flap-making instrument (microkeratome), to create the corneal flap, making it an All-Laser LASIK procedure.
