A Step-By-Step Guide to LASIK

Numbing the Eye
Before the LASIK procedure gets underway, eye drops are used to numb the eye. These take seconds to start working and last for about ten to 15 minutes.
Creating the Flap
The patient’s eyelids will then be propped open, and a precision flap-making instrument will be strategically positioned. While the patient looks at a fixation light, the doctor activates the instrument and creates the corneal flap, which is then folded away. At this point, vision will likely dim and blur when the flap is lifted. This step is normal.
Reshaping the Cornea
An excimer laser is then used to reshape the cornea. During this process, tissue is removed from the cornea.
Sealing the Flap
Once the cornea has been reshaped and the procedure is complete, the corneal flap must be sealed. The surgeon simply repositions the flap and then natural forces hold it in place until surface healing is complete. The surgeon may administer more eye drops at this point.
Recovery
The LASIK recovery process is simple. In fact, the corneal flap begins to heal just hours after the procedure is over. Patients are instructed to apply eye drops for five days after their LASIK treatment, and many patients who undergo this procedure resume their normal day-to-day activities within 24 hours.
Immediately following the procedure, a patient’s eyes may feel tired. This is completely normal, and it is recommended that the patient take a nap to allow the eyes time to rest.
