LASIK surgery
LASIK vision correction is an excellent alternative to eyeglasses and contact lenses. It has been helping people to reduce their dependency on glasses and contacts and regain an active lifestyle for over 20 years.
Common refractive errors such as nearsightedness (myopia) and farsightedness (hyperopia) are typically the result of the eye being too long or too short. Another common refractive error – called astigmatism - can also be caused by an irregular shaped cornea, which is the outer, clear portion of the eye’s surface.
The LASIK procedure uses an excimer laser to correct these common errors, by reshaping the cornea. This precise reshaping allows light rays to focus directly onto the back portion of the eye called the retina, providing clear vision.
Laser vision correction is quick and painless but also safe and effective with twenty years of proven results. During that time, over 35 million cases have been performed worldwide.
The LASIK procedure involves two steps:
A precise flap-making instrument known as a microkeratome, or a femtosecond laser (used in the All-Laser LASIK procedure) is used to create a thin flap of corneal tissue. This flap is raised and laid back but still attached to the cornea, in preparation for the actual laser vision correction procedure.
For the second step of the procedure, the surgeon will perform one of two laser vision correction techniques: Standard LASIK, or Advanced Custom Wavefront LASIK. In both techniques, an excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea by removing tissue from its middle layer.
